ServiceNow tackles ‘sidecar AI’ chaos with agentic workforce strategy

In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI), ServiceNow is addressing a critical challenge that many enterprises face today: the proliferation of disconnected “sidecar” AI tools. During a keynote at the ServiceNow World Tour in Sydney, company executives articulated a vision for a more cohesive and efficient use of AI within businesses, emphasizing the need for an orchestrated “agentic workforce” strategy.

Colin Fleming, the company’s chief marketing officer, highlighted a troubling trend where enterprises are failing to capitalize on AI’s transformative potential. ServiceNow’s recent research indicated that AI maturity in businesses dropped by 20% in the past year, despite the growing hype surrounding AI technologies. Fleming warned that companies are repeating historical mistakes made during the software revolution, leading to a “hornets’ nest of complexity” with the over-reliance on an overwhelming number of disjointed applications.

The statistics are staggering, with the average organization employing 367 different applications, each vying for its own AI integration—leading to isolated, ineffective systems. Fleming expressed his concerns, stating, “Each of those 367 different applications now wants its own AI bolted onto the side like a sidecar. None of them are connected, none of them knows what each other is doing, and none of them actually moves the work forward. They talk, they summarize, but they don’t do the work.” This chaotic approach not only stifles business transformation but also complicates operational efficiency.

ServiceNow proposes a paradigm shift from this fragmented approach to an intelligent, agentic workforce. This collective of orchestrated AI agents is designed to automate and handle complex workflows, thereby enhancing productivity and operational efficiency. The integration of tools such as the AI Agent Orchestrator and the AI Control Tower is central to this strategy. The Orchestrator helps coordinate the various AI agents, while the Control Tower serves as a command centre, providing oversight on governance, security, and performance tracking.

However, Gaurav Rewari, senior vice-president and general manager of data and analytics products at ServiceNow, pointed out that the journey to achieve this “AI agentic heaven” often encounters significant obstacles. He metaphorically described this pathway as a journey through “data hell”—a landscape riddled with data silos, fragmented systems, and performance bottlenecks.

In response to these challenges, ServiceNow is proactively building an AI-ready data foundation, marked by the development of RaptorDB, its proprietary database designed to facilitate the seamless integration and management of AI applications. This foundational step aims to eliminate the silos and fragmentation that have hindered data analytics and decision-making processes within organizations.

The implications of ServiceNow’s new strategy are profound. By moving towards an integrated approach to AI, businesses can harness the full power of AI technologies to streamline operations and drive innovation. The shift promises not just a resolution to existing AI fragmentation but also positions enterprises to take advantage of AI’s full capabilities, promoting a model where autonomous systems can make impactful decisions.
