The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to revolutionize highway maintenance across 40,000 kilometers of the national highway network with the deployment of AI-powered dashcam analytics services. This initiative comes in response to growing concerns about the quality of highway conditions, as public complaints have surged over 60% this year alone. The strategic decision to employ advanced vehicle-mounted dashcams aims to ensure a safer and more efficient travel experience for commuters throughout India.
With the increase in public grievances regarding highway conditions—skyrocketing from 7,030 complaints in the previous year to 11,340 as of March 12, 2024—the NHAI has taken proactive measures. The new AI-powered dashcams will be installed in every highway patrol vehicle, able to detect up to 30 different types of highway defects. This includes critical issues such as potholes, cracks, surface deterioration, and even non-functional street lights. To ensure comprehensive evaluations, nighttime inspections will be carried out at least once a month, focusing on the performance of road signage, pavement markings, road studs, and highway lighting.
Additionally, the initiative will address pressing issues like water stagnation and missing drainage covers, alongside vegetation growth and the upkeep of bus bays.
